Jyothika Saravanan (formerly Jyothika Sadanah) is one of the most versatile and multi-talented actors in South India. Her impressive filmography includes notable hit films, including Jyothika’s first Hindi movie, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, which was released in 1998. This marked her debut in the Indian film industry. Since then, her career graph has climbed steadily upwards, and she has had a string of successes in the Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada film industries.

In 2006, she married Tamil actor Suriya and took a short break from acting in films. However, after an eight-year sabbatical, she made a brilliant comeback with highly successful, women-centric films like 36 Vayadhinile (2015), Magalir Mattum (2017), Naachiyaar (2018), etc.

1. 36 Vayadhinile 

In 36 Vayadhinile, Jyothika’s middle-aged character Vasanthi seeks to become the answer to a question that plagues every homemaker: Should a woman’s dreams and aspirations be governed by her age and marital status? This Jyothika and Rahman movie, the Tamil remake of the Malayalam blockbuster ‘How old are you?’, is a must-watch woman empowerment film. Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, the film has an impressive list of actors – Nassar, Amritha Anil, Siddhartha Basu, Abhirami, Kalaranjini, Delhi Ganesh, etc. Santhosh Narayanan composed the music score for this film.

36 Vayadhinile is the first of many Jyothika movies after marriage, as the talented actor had taken an eight-year sabbatical from the film industry to focus on her family. 36 Vayadhinile is also yet another successful feature film from the star couple, the Suriya-Jyothika combo. However, unlike earlier films, Suriya dons the role of producer, and not an actor, for this mega-hit movie. 36 Vayadhinile is the debut venture of Suriya’s production house 2D Entertainment. Jyothika’s outstanding performance led her to win the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress (South).

2. Raatchasi

Raatchasi is a worthy addition to the list of Jyothika’s recent movies. Written and directed by Syed Gowthamraj, this movie highlights some of the pressing issues faced by government-owned schools in our country. The film revolves around Lieutenant Colonel Geeta Rani (played by Jyothika) as she tackles the inherent problems that face the local Government school, of which she is the headmistress. Actress Jyothika delivers a stunningly strong performance, especially in the scenes where she stands up for the school and its students.

Released in 2019, Raatchasi boasts an impressive cast list- Hareesh Peradi, Poornima Bhagyaraj, Sathyan, Nagineedu, Aruldoss, Kavitha Bharathy, etc. Sean Roldan provides a memorable music score for the film. Jyothika’s exceptional talent landed her the Dadasaheb Phalke Awards South 2020 for Best Actress in a lead role. She also won the Edison Awards (Tamil) for Best Actress. 3. Chandramukhi

The horror-comedy film Chandramukhi deserves a special place in the Jyothika hit movies list. This big-budget film, reportedly produced at the cost of 19 crores, is a remake of the 1993 Malayalam hit film Manichitrathazhu. Chandramukhi was directed by P. Vasu, who also wrote the screenplay. It also stars Superstar Rajinikanth, along with Prabhu, Sheela, Nassar, Nayanthara & Vadivelu. Chandramukhi even has the distinction of being the 50th film from Sivaji Productions.

4. Mozhi

This feel-good film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead, along with Prakash Raj, Swarnamalya, Brahmanandam, etc. The music was composed by Vidyasagar and the film was shot in India and Mauritius. 5. Kaatrin Mozhi

Released in 2018, Kaatrin Mozhi is a relatively recent addition to the Jyothika hit movies list. This immensely entertaining film will have you rolling in your seats with laughter! Each time Jyothika uses her sensual voice during her stint as a late-night radio jockey, it’s almost guaranteed that there will be mayhem in the following scenes. 6. Ponmagal Vandhal

The Superstar-couple Jyothika and Suriya are back again! Just like in 36 Vayadhinile, this legal drama film is produced under Suriya’s 2D Entertainment, while his wife Jyothika takes on the leading role of a newbie lawyer seeking justice for a wrongfully convicted/executed serial killer. Released in 2020 during the Covid pandemic, Ponmagal Vandhal was the first venture of debutant director J. J. Fredrick. This was the first time audiences saw a Jyothika lawyer movie, and it was a fantastic hit, nevertheless! Ponmagal Vandhal is a milestone movie as it showcases the hidden truths of child rape survivors.

This Jyothika thriller movie stars an ensemble cast made up of versatile actors like the late Pratap K. Pothan, K. Bhagyaraj, Vidya Pradeep, R. Parthiban, Subbu Panchu, Thiyagarajan, R. Pandiarajan, etc. Due to Covid restrictions, this film could not be released in cinema theatres and had to be released on the OTT platform Amazon Prime.

7. Perazhagan

Jyothika’s filmography is incomplete with the inclusion of the comedy-drama film Perazhagan, as it is notable for many reasons. It is one of the most entertaining Suriya-Jyothika movies of all time, with both actors taking on dual roles in the film. Released in 2004, this hilarious film was directed by the late Sasi Shanker, who had also directed the 2002 Malayalam film Kunjikoonan from which this film was inspired. The music composer for this film is Yuvan Shankar Raja. This film had an ensemble cast that comprised an impressive list of veteran actors – the late actors Vivek, Sukumari, Manorama & Manikka Vinayagam had significant roles in this film.

Jyothika won several awards and accolades for her performance in Perazhagan. She won the 2004 Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress and the 2004 Dinakaran Film Award for Best Actress. If destiny wills, nothing can keep you from your soulmate. This is the central theme that reverberates throughout this terrific rom-com starring Vijay and Jyothika. Actors Mumtaj, Vivek and Vijayakumar portray crucial supporting roles in this film. Written and directed by S. J. Suryah, this Jyothika-Vijay movie was a box-office hit in 2000. Its success prompted several remakes in other languages like Telugu, Kannada & Hindi.

Jyothika got several awards for her memorable performance in this romantic film. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award in Tamil, the Dinakaran Film Awards for Best Actress & the Cinema Express Awards in the Best Sensational Actress category.

9. Pachaikili Muthucharam 

Pachaikili Muthucharam is proof of Jyothika’s acting prowess. She successfully portrays a negative character in this action-thriller movie written and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. Musician Harris Jayaraj has composed five songs for this awe-inspiring Jyothika cinema. Released in 2007, this film was inspired by the 2005 film ‘Derailed’. Sarath Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Milind Soman, Ganesh, etc., have acted in this film.

This film did not perform as expected at the Box-office. However, the thrilling Gautham Menon-Jyothika combo has been praised by many film lovers. Jyothika won the Ananda Vikatan Award for Best Villain (Female) for her awe-inspiring performance in this film.

Undoubtedly, this action-thriller hit film is amongst the best movies of Suriya and Jyothika! The intense romantic chemistry between the characters portrayed by this star couple (ACP Anbuselvan IPS & Maya) is still etched in the minds of many cinema lovers. Released in 2003, Kaakha Kaakha was a major box-office success, and it cemented the careers of director Gautham Menon, and actors Suriya and Jyothika. Actor Jeevan’s portrayal of the villainous role of Pandiya is still very memorable. Harris Jayaraj provided several foot-tapping hit songs for this film, like ‘Uyirin Uyirae’, and ‘Ondra Renda’. 

Jyothika’s role as Maya was especially praise-worthy and she went on to win the International Tamil Film Awards (ITFA) Best Actress Award (Special Jury).
