“Matha, Pitha, Guru, Daivam”
When translated, this Sanskrit phrase carries a profound message that highlights the importance of teachers in our lives. As per this, the guru, or teacher, is placed between the parents and the divine, signifying their unique position in this hierarchy of respect. This serves to exemplify the crucial role that teachers play in the child’s life and, subsequently, in society.
To honour these multifaceted individuals, we at Top 10s Only have put together a brief article that examines the significance of celebrating Teacher’s Day in India.
How Did Teacher’s Day Originate And When Is It Celebrated In India?
In India, Teacher’s Day is an annual commemoration that falls on the 5th of September. But why is Teachers’ Day celebrated on this day?
Teachers’ Day’s history can be traced back to a fateful day in 1962, when a group of students approached Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first vice president and, subsequently, the second president of India. They had come with a request for permission to celebrate his birthday. However, despite being an accomplished politician, diplomat, philosopher, and educator, Dr. Radhakrishnan was the epitome of humility. He asked the students to dedicate the day to honouring each and every teacher in the country instead of just him. His tenure in various prestigious educational institutions across the nation had given him insight into the vital role that teachers played in nurturing and moulding the minds of the future generation.
Thus, the first Teachers’ Day in India was celebrated on September 5th, 1962, and the tradition has continued to this day.
